Just slightly heavier in task manager but still not nearly as bad as some of the options out there that are a bit resource heavy (ie, PowerDVD). That being said, we have been using it for some time now and through our experience thus far, we do find that it isn’t terrible on resources. More involved with more options and features, which of course, means it will no longer be that simple interface that doesn’t take any resources to open. With the new design, things get a little more involved. You can see a video playing in the main image above the story.
SPECIFIC UPNP PLAYER ADDRESS VLC SKIN
A very clean interface that reminds us a little of our favorite skin for the VLC version of the player ( Minimal X) that many of us use. What is really nice is the fact that once you start playing into a video, the interface becomes quite streamlined and friendly. This is likely where you may begin to see additional streaming options as they get closer to a public rollout of the player.
Tabs are available to switch between bringing you access to your collection, podcasts, and more. Of course, you can remove or add them at will depending on the options you are looking for (in our image above, we don’t have any files on that system, so there is nothing displayed in our situation). You are welcomed with a new home screen that automatically starts scanning for music or videos within your normal user folders. A new interface with more complex options to it, opening up the addition of apps and possibly streaming services as well.
Now, for the first time in a long time, the player is getting a complete overhaul. It’s flexible, it’s simple, it’s fast, it supports just about every format, and it’s free. Just about anything can be moved around, added, or dropped from the interface, and then you have the options of skins on top of it all. Mostly thanks to its streamlined design and heavily customized interface. VLC has been one of the most widely used options out there for general video and audio playback within Windows, Mac, Linux, and more. VLC 4.0 is right around the corner, launching sometime this year. The gears at VideoLAN are spinning as they prepare for the launch of the next generation of one of the most popular media players available for just about every operating system out there.
